Song of the day – GWETA

This Togolese music group,Toofan, has grown from that tiny country to conquer the rest of Africa with the Ogbragada genre. Obragada, is a very popular style in French speaking Africa. It’s a mixture of indigenous music, hip hop, funk, reggae, R&B ,rap, and even comedy. In the Mina language of Togo it means, I’m fine.

Toofan is made up of two young artists: A. Mensah Blaise aka Fantohou Barabas and K. Just aka Master Form. The group maybe second to P-Square in Africa but in French Africa, they are on top! They are new school and have gone super popular in their 8 years of existence. The dance ‘Gweta’ comes with who they are – inventors – new school artists with a new vibe. Enjoy the music 🙂

2013 Dumbo Art Festival

The 17th annual DUMBO Arts Festival is a three-day FREE public event celebration of art, music, and performance that took place over the weekend (Sept. 27-29). Each year it seeks to highlight Brooklyn’s commitment to and presence in the arts community by presenting the best in local, national, and international art amid the breathtaking backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline.

Visitors can enjoy outdoor and indoor visual art installations and exhibitions, digital art and large scale projections. They can also visit artists in their studios, help make murals on the street, or watch dancers, poets and actors on street corners throughout the neighborhood. While the main events end earlier, the projections can be seen through midnight all three nights.

I had an awesome weekend at afropunk hanging out with friends and enjoying some great music. Going on its 10th year, Afropunk has brought a mixture of punk attitude and African-American culture to Brooklyn. Afropunk Fest rocks out at the Fort Greene’s Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn the weekend of Aug. 24 and Aug. 25. Bringing together urban culture and live music, such as  rap luminaries like Chuck D and Questlove, bands like Trash Talk and Pryamids, and emerging hip-hop artists like Danny Brown and Theophilus London. In addition, there will be  food trucks, a skate park, and a custom bike show hosted by Brooklyn Rhapsody. Afropunk Fest is geared toward those who enjoy coming together for one weekend to celebrate unconventional art in all forms. Check out some of the most interesting hairstyles (thick dreads, detailed high-top fades) and clothing (skillfully tattered tops, crazy prints) the weekend had to offer.

Song of the Day! MAFIKIZOLO ft Uhuru KHONA

Mafikizolo is an Afro-pop group/band from South Africa. It is made up of lead singer/composer Nhlanhla Sibongile Mafu Nciza and songwriter/composer/singer Theo Kgosinkwe. The song Khona was written and sung in the Zulu Language. Khona means ‘there’ or ‘at that place’. It is one of the tracks in their February (2013) released album titled – Reunited. When i saw the video i was like WOOOOWWWW..the beat, the art design, the geometric shapes and colors, the production and the costume design were just so amazing and inspiring. I love the song…just makes you wanna dance, check it out.
